Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms living in the arteries of the lungs and occasionally in the right side of the heart of dogs, cats and other species of mammals, including wolves, foxes, ferrets, sea lions and (in rare instances) humans. It is transmitted by mosquitoes and it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to infect a dog.
Heartworm disease has been reported in all 50 states.
Our clinic treats many dogs every year for heartworm. The treatment is very costly. If you'd like to donate to our medical fund, you can mail your contribution to:
Shelter From The Storm/Spay Me!
Attn: Medical Fund
1602 Blossom Lane
Madison, WI 53716
Your donation will enable us to help more dogs and cats with special medical needs.
Harper (above) and Blythe (below) are two of the dogs currently being treated for heartworm disease. Shelter From The Storm currently has four dogs in rescue that are receiving treatment and the cost of the treatment can reach $500.00 per dog.
